This past June Ms. Barefoot and a West journalist team of seven students spent three days at the North Carolina Scholastic Media Institute (NCSMI)  on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus.  At the institute, West students were split into different journalistic divisions: design, literary magazine, and photography.  Students also participated in professor/teacher lectures, interactive assignments, and speaker panels.

West sophomore, Brooke Kesky, enjoyed her time at the summer institute  “I had a lot of fun, my favorite part was the design activities we did.”  Kesky received a first place award for Design-Beginning News.

Ms. Barefoot and the journalism class plan to continue to attend NCSMI events as the program strengthens.
