Counselors’ Corner

Seniors:

  • At this time, you should have finished (or be finishing up) FAFSA and college applications. Bring a copy of all college financial awards and recognition to your counselor; we want to recognize you!
  • Finish STRONG! Don’t let spring fever & senioritis take over! Even after being accepted, colleges expect you to follow the same pattern of hard work you put into your first semester!

Juniors:

  • All juniors will be taking the ACT on February 27th. You can prepare for college entrance exams by using ACT & SAT web sites as well as Kaplan, Khan Academy and many other resources.
    • This is a free opportunity to take a college entrance exam. Please make the most of it by preparing so that you will not have to give up and one of your Saturdays for this exam!
  • See your counselor to register for the SAT either a week before February 27th or a month or two after the ACT allowing you to have time to study, as recommended by Mrs. Masiko-Meyer. Stop by to see your counselor with any questions.
  • As a junior, you should be thinking about courses that will finalize your pathway. A pathway concentration is required for graduation, it constitutes four courses in a specific series. If you are unsure of your pathway, be sure to stop by your counselor.

Sophomores:

  • You will soon be registering for your junior year classes! Did you know that your junior year grades are what colleges focus on the most? When you apply at the beginning of your senior year, only your freshman, sophomore and junior grades will be shown. Choose wisely and get the best grades you can so you can have every opportunity open to you as a junior.

Freshman:

  • You’ve just received your first GPA! Why is your GPA important? It is one of the very first things that colleges see, as well as qualifying you for scholarships and jobs. Athletes, your minimum GPA to get in colleges varies, so try your best to get the best grades possible! See your counselor with any questions.

Counselor Confidentiality:

Did you know that among other things in education, you can talk to your counselor in confidence? This means you can share ANYTHING with your counselor, as long as it doesn’t place you or someone else are in harm’s way. Everything else stays between the counselor and you.  Please don’t hesitate to see your counselor if you have any concerns!
