Spring sports season has started, and the Women’s Varsity Lacrosse team is ready to kick the season into gear.

“We have a really stacked team, like we’re definitely really loaded, and we got a lot of talent,” says senior Ana Poulin.

Since the introduction of lacrosse into West only five years ago, the program has become stronger and stronger, learning new tactics and winning more and more each year.

“My goal is to win our conference and go to states for the first time ever,” says coach Kate Gentle.

The team has grown exponentially since its start; it has attracted many new members this year, like junior Rosie Marley.

“I played soccer for thirteen and a half years, so switching over to a new sport is something kinda different for me,” Marley says. “I’m mostly excited for making a new family and finding out more about the sport.”

Becoming a new member of the lacrosse team is difficult, but being a senior who has played lacrosse all four years of your high school career, like Ana Poulin, is a struggle as well.

“Literally all of my friends are on the team… so having to leave the team after being with them for a couple years is gonna be really hard,” said Poulin.

No matter who you ask, anyone on the women’s lacrosse team will say their team is more like a family. Most of the girls on the team have been playing together for years now, or are friends outside of lacrosse. Having a close-knit relationship helps the girls to perform better together on the field.

“My expectation for my team this season is for them to play together as a unit,” says coach Gentle.

The team is excited to get off the practice field and onto the real field to win games. As in most other sports at West, South is the team’s biggest rival.

“I’m mostly excited to play South,” says sophomore Cecelia Vergara.

The girls have put a lot of hard work into practice before season, and their desire to win is higher than ever. Poulin is confident about this season, as she says, “I’m excited that we’re gonna win a lot.”
