Walking into the noisy gym, students shouted and cheered as staff and students battled it out in a fast paced, competitive dodgeball game.

West Brunswick’s Interact Club took a simple schoolyard game and used staff and students competitiveness to raise money for a good cause.

“We chose Sustainable Cambodia as our world service project,” says Interact advisor Jennifer Johnson, “Our goal was to fully sponsor two children, which will be $600.”

West Brunswick’s staff and students faced off in a friendly competition to raise money for children in Cambodia.

“The money raised will completely transform children of Cambodia’s lives,” says Johnson, “and give them a better trajectory with proper schooling and help them learn a trade so that they can make money for their family and not just get by, but prosper.”

Playing against teachers and administrators is very unusual for students, but with a sport like dodgeball, it’s worth the sweat. For junior Brandon Aycock, this was his favorite part about playing in the game.

“The dodgeball game was very fun,” said Aycock. “I got to hit Mr. Paschal right in the face with a dodgeball.”

This fundraising event was one of Interact’s greatest. Johnson believes with the success, this will become a tradition.

“We’re still in the process of determining our final number but it looks like with the money raised, we will be able to fully sponsor four children,” said Johnson.

While students lost time in the classroom, students’ time spent playing with staff was unforgettable.

“I think it was worthwhile,” said Johnson. “It only took up 30 min of instruction time, but sometimes you have to let loose and have a little fun for a good cause.”
