Virtual Reality: The War of Platforms

An opinion based column about gaming.

PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, PC–what side are you on? Do you play on multiple platforms, or do you stay loyal to one? Whichever platform you play depends on what games you want to play and what features you want to have. Let us dive into the pros and cons of each.

A PlayStation Controller.

First up, we have PlayStation, a console by Sony. PlayStation has the largest community out of all the consoles; most games are always on PlayStation for this reason. The most recent PlayStation console is the PS4; the PS5 will be released soon. To play online with friends, you must have PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Now. Both of these options give you perks like discounts on games or free games. I see why so many people choose PlayStation as their console choice, as so many people have it and the wide variety of games available on the console.

An Xbox Controller.

The next console is Xbox, a console by Microsoft. Xbox has a slightly smaller community, but it is still a strong one. The newest Xbox is the Xbox One X; the Xbox series X will be released very soon. Like PlayStation, you have to buy a subscription to play online. Xbox also has different choices to play online, one is Xbox Live Gold, and the other option is the Game Pass Ultimate. With the Game Pass, you also get over 200 free games and some discounts. One thing I love about Xbox is the controllers; they have a great feel and placement. I can see why people choose Xbox as it gives the option to purchase over 200 free games and get many perks with the Game Pass.

The Nintendo Switch Controllers.

It is time to talk about the Nintendo Switch and the Wii U; these platforms, in my opinion, are used for more casual gaming. Nintendo is an independent platform, so this is the only platform where you can find most Nintendo games. Many people who own Switches use another console or a PC because there are not many Switch games. I think owning a Switch is excellent, but if you want to be a “hardcore gamer,” you should pair it with another platform.

Lastly, I want to talk about PCs. PCs are the most customizable of all the platforms. You can either build a custom PC or buy a prebuilt; either way, it’s still very unique to your personal needs. One of the biggest pros of PC gaming is that you don’t have to pay to play online with friends. Many different apps are used to purchase games and install them on your computer, the one that most PC gamers use is Steam. If you want a subscription for some free games, you can get the Xbox Game Pass for PC because it is Microsoft.

My personal preference is PC. I currently own an Xbox, an old original Nintendo console, and a Super Nintendo console. I am also building a PC, and I hope to complete it by the end of 2021.

Whichever you choose to play, you can’t really go wrong because all of the options are great options.
