Brunswick County is truly beautiful and we take it for granted most of the time. I know a lot of the locals like to stick to the Walmart parking lot; but, sometimes it’s good to branch off and enjoy the gems that this place has to offer.

Starting strong with Bald Head Island, located on the east side of the Cape Fear River, this island has few cars; instead, residents drive electric golf carts. The village of Baldhead Island is small and somewhat remote, you can reach the island by a ferry from Southport. On the island, you can visit the lighthouse “Old Baldy”, go on nature walks, have fun doing water sports, sightseeing, fishing; tennis, golf, eating, relaxing, and so much more.

The next hidden gem is Bird island with its secret-filled kindred spirit mailbox. This mailbox holds notebooks of thoughts, dreams, wishes, and secrets from travelers passing by.

Last and certainly not least, we have the underrated Calabash Waterfront. Calabash is considered the “seafood capital of the world.” Enjoy restaurants such as Waterfront Seafood Shack, Oyster Rock, Captain Nance’s, and Captain John’s, which are right on the water. These include the most perfect view of the Calabash River.

Brunswick County is such a beautiful area with tons of beaches, things to do, and places to see. Everyone should take the time to enjoy it, and see its true beauty.
