On Thursday, September 26th the West Brunswick Trojans Women’s tennis team traveled to Topsail to take on the Topsail Pirates. It was a cloudy cool afternoon as the Trojans arrived around three to warm up before the match that was to start at four. The Trojans had already played Topsail at home, with a loss of 9-0.
Coach Scott Mehalick has the players stand around as he calls up his top 6 players for the match. Senior Hannah Cumbee at first, Senior Sydney Beliveau second, Sophomore Kimberly Bart third, Junior Finn Gorritz fourth, Senior Hannah Underwood fifth and sophomore Taylor Hughes at sixth. The players head out to their assigned courts to meet their opponent. Each player and opponent then warm up before starting their first set of the two to be played.
Although the singles portion of the match did not see any wins, there were some great and close points played by the team. Now, it was time for the doubles portion where 2 players from the Trojans team will face 2 players from the Pirates team. The doubles teams consisted of Hannah Cumbee and Sydney Beliveau playing first, Finn Gorritiz and Kimberly Bart at second, and Taylor Hughes and Phoebe Cumbee playing third. There was great communication, hustle and effort in each of these matches.
The 1st doubles match was a loss with a final score of 3-8 for the Trojans, the 2nd doubles was a loss with the score of 0-8 for the Trojans and the 3rd and final doubles match was also a loss with the score of 1-8. Although the Trojans didn’t win, they came off the courts with smiles knowing they played their best. The match ends with a win for Topsail and a loss for the Trojans 0-9.
The Trojans have already experienced 2 wins this season against the big rival South, and North Brunswick High School. Come out and support the Trojans for their next match on 9/30 against the Laney Buccaneers.
