It’s Homecoming week. It will be from October 14th through the 18th. This year’s homecoming is filled with all sorts of new things, such as new spirit days, more pep rally games, Powderpuff, the first ever Buff Puff, and for the first time in eight years a homecoming dance.
Spirit Days – “Throwback Thursday” said Sophomore Ginger Rogers when asked what her favorite spirit day is. “I’m dressing up like the 90’s and think is will be so fun”
Throwback Thursday is just one of the five themes this homecoming week with the others being, Meme Monday, Type Tuesday, Character Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and Class Color Friday.
Each of these themes will bring new ideas, fun outfits, and cool ways to express your spirit.
- On Meme day, the goal is to dress up as your favorite meme. T-Bo from I-Carly was one of the favorites this day/
- Tuesday is Type Tuesday. This is where you dress as you “type” or like your boyfriend or girlfriend. For example maybe you play soccer and your significant other plays baseball or softball, what you could do is trade jerseys and try and dress like each other.
- Character Wednesday is a date where you can get all of you and your friends to dress up together. Groups could be the Spongebob friend group, Minions, or even the Ninja Turtles. Something that gets you and your friends together.
- Thursday is Throwback day you could dress up as any decade rather than the 70’s, 80’s, or maybe even as people from the stone age. The goal is to dress up as people from the past.
- Friday is class color day, one of the more traditional one’s West has had for years.. Freshman will wear white, sophomore’s in green, junior’s wear black, and seniors will wear the famous togas.
PowderPuff and Buff Puff – This year there will be two homecoming week games, one being the well known Powderpuff and the other being the latest game, Buff Puff.
Powderpuff is the classic girls flag football game that will take place Wednesday, October 16th. There will be two teams freshman and seniors to sophomores and juniors. The game will be coached by selected football players in hopes to win the game.
You may be wondering what Buff Puff is. It is similar to the girls’ Powderpuff game, but it is a boys’ volleyball game hosted by the National Honors Society. It will take place the Wednesday after Powderpuff, October the 23. Due to the big crowd of boys wanting to play, there will be four teams this year that will face off in a bracket-style tournament, with the final winning team facing off against the girls’ varsity volleyball team.
“I think the competition will get pretty heated,” said senior Jacob Rumsey, the Honors Society president who has taken charge of running the first Buff Puff here at school, “Especially if they play against the actual girls’ team, it will make some great games to watch”
Pep Rally – As always the pep rally will take place on gameday, Friday the 18th at the end of the school day. There will be many fun games to sign up for during lunch such as tug a war, apple bobbing, find the item, and many other fun ones to sign up for during lunch. We will see the dance team dance with the football boys, the cheerleaders perform, meet the homecoming court, and the teacher court. So make sure to attend the pep rally to see all the fun things going on.
“I’m so excited for the pep rally,” said Sophomore Emma Lockner. “I feel like it will be a lot of fun and I have heard rumors about some of the games being played and I can’t wait.”
Gameday – This year’s homecoming will be played against the North Brunswick Scorpions. It will start at 7 o’clock. During halftime the homecoming court will be announced as well as the cheerleaders and dancers performing their amazing halftime performance. It is expected to be a competitive match that will be great to watch.
While the confidence is not completely there with the fans, the football players are excited about the game and can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Bejeweled – This year we will finally be getting the long awaited homecoming dance. It will begin at 7 o’clock in the school cafeteria with the theme being bejewel. So make sure you show up all shimmer, shiny, and sparkly for the beginning of a new era of homecoming dances.
“I think the dance will be fun,” said sophomore Abi Davis. “It’s something new our school hasn’t done before and I hope it will turn out fun and something that can be continued.”
