The past week of homecoming has filled our halls with wigs, capes, hats and togas. Each day students have dressed up in accordance with the daily theme, showing off their costumes and accessories as well as their Trojan pride. On Friday, October 18th, the theme was Color Wars. Every grade was assigned a different color to wear, and students united with their peers under our school palette.
Color Wars is a common Spirit Week theme in high schools across America, but the tradition has been a part of West for years. While the official school colors name just green and white, the spectrum of pride goes beyond just the two. This year, freshmen dressed in white, sophomores wore green, juniors styled in black, and seniors rocked their togas. Togas have been the theme for seniors on this day for a long time, and they always spark excitement. Students look forward to participating in this custom starting their freshman year.
This spirit day had by far the most participation. This classic theme is always a hit thanks to the minimalistic concept of dressing in one color. It gives an opportunity for all students to participate, even if they don’t have the materials to create a special outfit. Although simple, this day hypes everyone up for the homecoming game, which took place the same night. This year’s homecoming week was also especially thrilling as students prepared for the first official homecoming dance, which took place Saturday, October 19.
The current traditions in place at our school are powered by our students. Without the student body, there wouldn’t be any traditions to begin with. It’s an honor to carry on the legacy of alumni, but it’s also an honor for every generation to put a personal spin on it as well. With hearts that bleed green, the love for West Brunswick High School is something you can’t deny.
