This year’s Trojani staff is following the state and nationwide yearbook trend of removing senior quotes from the portrait section. This decision has boiled into a controversy, leading to months of debate.
Why Does It Matter
Senior quotes have become the way seniors leave an impact when leaving high school. Some use them to leave funny sayings while others use it to express how they felt about high school.
Students’ Opinions
The overall collection of the interviews shows that West thinks senior quotes are “A way to express yourself,” said senior Jared Furmard. “I didn’t have one in mind yet but I was looking forward to making one.”
Do Seniors know
Most thought it was tradition and didn’t think it would get taken away this year. “I think some seniors would be upset about them not doing it this year if they knew about it,” said Furmard.
What was the decision
There were a few reasons why West Brunswick and other high schools have decided not to do senior quotes this year.“After discussing the lack of participation, inappropriate submissions, and several other factors,” said Yearbook teacher Crystal Karwacki. “We decided to omit the senior quotes to save time and additional costs. Seniors may add a personal quote to their senior ad.”
- Last year there was a mistake where a quote wasn’t appropriate for the yearbook and made it in by accident which caused them to have to go and hold off on yearbooks to fix them all.
- Also, some said it was a lot of work to go through every quote from every senior that submitted one and chose if they were appropriate or not and some were a little iffy and just too much trouble to do.
