On Friday, November 22, the West Brunswick Varsity Boys Basketball team won their home game against St. Pauls’ Bulldogs. West Brunswick nearly doubled St. Pauls’ score with a final score of 53-27.
Cheerleaders take on the court as the lights dim down to put on a show for the audience. The players run onto the court, making the student section go crazy. The teams go to each side of the court to begin their warm-up routine.
On our side of the court, players begin doing layup lines, followed by practicing their passing and defense. As the time ticks down, the tipoff is soon to start.
K’Veon Griffin does not go for a tip-off, runs by the opponent, and gets the first possession of the game. He passes the ball to Matt McKenney, and he splashes a three within the first five seconds of the game.
West held St. Paul scoreless for the first three minutes of the game and finished the quarter tripling their score, it being 18-6. The game never came close as West Brunswick held their opponents to 14 in the first half and scored nineteen ourselves.
After only scoring one point in the second quarter, West returned after halftime with a different mentality. Throughout the third quarter, West scored an astonishing 28 points and held the Bulldogs to 2.
With a heavy lead, West begins to lay down and let some of the bench players come in to shine. Scoring 6 in the fourth quarter and holding the Bulldogs to eleven, West ended up winning 53-27.
One of the most noticeable players throughout the night was junior Matt McKenney. He forced 12 turnovers throughout the game while only playing sixteen minutes. Matt McKenney had one of his best performances as he led the team in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals.
