“I love Valentine’s Day,” said biology teacher Craig Weeks. “I get to show my wife how much I love her.”
Ever since Saint Valentine himself started secretly marrying young sweethearts in the 14th century, Valentine’s Day, February 14th has been known as a day of love and cherishing one another.
“I don’t care too much,” said junior Henry Phillips, a common sentiment for many people. While Valentine’s Day isn’t always everyone’s favorite to see pop on their calendar, especially those without someone to celebrate with, there are many ways to properly ask someone to be your valentine. Simple ways, yet still they touch the heart and show someone you care about them. This is “how to” do just that.
“Going up to their door will never hurt,” said junior Ethan Click. “I think a nice basket with candy and fun stuff is the right way to go.”
Going up to their door is one of the most important things you can do. It shows a sense of respect and consideration. It gives you a chance to talk for a minute, maybe say hi to the family, and in this case, you can give your significant other whatever you might have for them on the special day of love.
“I think flowers are a very good way to go,” said junior Tess Caron. “They are cute and always nice to receive.”
Flowers are colorful and unique, they smell great and can show your fondness for someone. There’s also never a wrong type of flower to get either, rather it’s the ones you pick up from a florist, pretty wildflowers on the side of the road, or maybe you pick out bright yellow flowers because that’s their favorite color, flowers will never go unthanked.
Showing that you care and remembering the details can make a huge difference. How do you feel when someone remembers your birthday, maybe your favorite movie, or even remembers the funny story of how you got a funny-looking scar on you, knowing the details and being sentimental go a long way.
“I think the sentimental things are cute,” said sophomore Grace Migliore. “They are a nice way to show you care without spending a ton of money.”
Sentimental things could be all kinds of sorts and there are a million ideas on how to make it special for your valentine. Things such as a cute framed photo, a scrapbook of memories, inside jokes, and photos, or even something as just a nice handwritten card, will make your partner feel seen and greatly valued.
“I looked at my wife and I said ‘Baby, will you be my valentine,” said Weeks. “She said yes of course and we are going to that restaurant in Calabash, the Boundary House.”
The date portion of Valentine’s Day is also important, so not only greeting them at the door, opening all the doors, and bringing flowers, but the “where” can be a huge factor. Maybe you go to the movies, go to a nice dinner, even if it’s what we teens call nice, such as a Chick-Fil-A, a heart tray of nuggets, watching the sunset at the beach, simply hanging out with one another might be all that’s needed.
“A flying billboard on the beach sounds good to me,” says Phillips. “Maybe with some chocolate”
While a flying billboard might be hard to arrange, the hope is that everyone can either gain not only chocolate this Valentine’s season, but also acquire the love and excitement of this charming holiday, maybe you could become the next Saint Valentine.
