On Thursday, February 4, our men’s varsity basketball team had the closest game of the season against Ashley. The final score being 64-61 had the audience at the edge of their seats.
The Trojans ran onto the court as people cheered from all around, waiting for tip-off to begin. The referee threw up the ball as Junior K’Veon Griffin did his signature move and didn’t go for a tip-off. Letting Ashley get the ball first was a smart move as they did not score on the first possession. Junior Matt McKenney gets the rebound and takes it down the court, passing to Junior John Daniels for a deep three that hits the back rim. Not scoring on their possession for either team was disappointing but then the points started to skyrocket with the Trojans taking a 21-13 lead with Griffin hitting a spectacular fast break dunk that made the audience ecstatic.
Starting the second quarter with a lead to play off of had the starters have some time to rest. After half of the second quarter went by, the starters came back onto the court and put on a performance for the fans. Nearly doubling Ashley’s score to end the first half put the Trojans in a position to get a guaranteed win.
The third quarter had a bit of a comeback for Ashley as they were only down by 10 to end the quarter. Now time for the most intense part of the game, the fourth quarter. Fans were going through mixed emotions while watching the ending parts of the last quarter. Going back and forth between taking the lead, the West Brunswick Trojans clutched up and scored on back-to-back possessions during the last minute taking the lead and the win by 4 points.
The most notable player from this game was Griffin, as he set the tone within the first couple of minutes of the game with an amazing dunk. Scoring 23 points and having 5 assists had Griffin leading the team in both of those stat categories.
While McKenney and Griffin combined for a near 50 points, it’s safe to say that this was one of the best games to have been at all season.
