Having an older kid to look up to even if it’s just for a few hours can make a huge impact on a little kid’s life and that’s exactly what the varsity women’s soccer team did on April 7th, 2024. The team headed down the road to Waccamaw elementary to have a fun afternoon with a class of first graders.
The day started off with some tie-dying. Each kid had a partner and got a t-shirt that they could work together to dye. From fun colors, unique patterns, a slight mess, and smiles all around the littles had a great time making some eye-catching shirts.
After the fun tie-dye adventurous it was time for english and math work. First up the kids grabbed the book they were reading and began to read it to their partner. If they got stuck on a tricky word or needed help with what something meant they had the chance to ask for help from a player. Then it was math time, they were continuing to focus on shapes and even got to make a bunny with shape blocks with the help of the high school girls.
After all the reading and math work it was time for what is everyone’s favorite part of the school day, one that us high schoolers don’t get to enjoy anymore, recess. At first the playground was busy with other grades, so instead we taught them how to play sharks and minnows. Even with a few slips and falls they enjoyed it and seemed to have lots of fun playing. After the sharks and minnows the playground was open. From racing with the big kids, playing tag, going on the seesaw, and across the monkey bars the kids both elementary and high school had a great time at recess.
Unfortunately after recess it was time for the soccer team to head back to west and start practice. They had a great time with the kids and it is something they hope to continue. It had a lasting impact on the kids from making new friends to a smile that is set to bring one to their faces every time they think back about this day.
