On Tuesday, September 23, our mens varsity soccer team matched up against South Brunswick, our new conference rivals, in a thrilling overtime win. Before the game started, West practiced their striking, passing, and defense against one another. The referee blew the whistle, signaling to both teams that the game was going to begin soon.
Both teams lined up on their own side toward the far ends of the stands. Each player ran towards their position on the field as the announcer called their name. Possessions of the ball going back and forth in the first half of the game made it unclear which team had the advantage.
Sophomore Avery Kollman was the only player to score in the first half, which gave West the lead before half time. During half time, West went into their locker room while friends and siblings of the players went onto the field to play their own games.
The second half of the game started off stronger, with senior Anh Nguyen scoring within the first couple minutes. Nguyen hit the signnature knee slide celebraton and brought the score to 2-0 with eight minutes left in the game. Sadly this lead did not stay, as South scored 2 more goals, tying it up before the second half ended.
Overtime started as West got possesion of the ball first, shot after shot, each one getting blocked. This sent the game into the second half of overtime. Players, coaches and fans cheered with excitement due to Kollman’s second goal, which brought the game to 3-2. With one minute left in the game, each team exchanged a few words, pushes and hits, causing a scene for all the fans. After all of the struggles throughout the game, West came out on top winning 3-2, all thanks to the team working together to face their toughest challenge yet.
