On October 18, 2025, millions across the United States participated in the No Kings Protest, taking a stand against the idea of dictatorship and authoritarianism burgeoning in the U.S., particularly within the Trump administration.
“I thought it was really meaningful,” said junior Bella Thomas. “I thought it was really cool people were out there rallying for what they believe in.”
There were said to be about seven million people that participated in this protest on the 18th, across all 50 states and in over 2,700 locations. One of those locations being the town of Shallotte here in Brunswick County, North Carolina.
Brunswick County, a far more red, MAGA affiliated town had a fairly decent turnout despite this. People lined each corner on main street and then some. Protesters held signs with words like “Honk if you’re not in Epstein files”, “No Kings, No Felons” and “Liberty and Justice for All”
The protest consisted mainly of elders, people in their 30’s or older and with a fair mix of both men and women. Yet it lacked the younger generation in Shallotte. As I walked by other protesters I was often greeted with “Yay, a young person!” or “Thanks for helping us old people out!”
As one walked through main street you might have heard chants like “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Donald Trump has got to go!” or people singing a song by Woodie Gurthie by the name of “This Land is Your Land”.
Not everyone had the same eagerness to be there though. Cars and motorcycles drove by many with Trump flags or MAGA stickers attached to the vehicle in one way or another. These same cars often drove by flipping off the peaceful protesters or some nasty words when stopped at a light.
Still, despite the gloominess that attempted to silence the peaceful protesters, the protesters didn’t let it stop them. They continued on, using their voice to call for a change and fight for what they believe in.
