WBHS Politico: Party Based Bias

Oct 16, 2018

Politics in the current social climate of the United States have become less about achieving the greater good of the country and more about advancing one’s party. Several politicians have said that more or less the advancement of the conservative or liberal agenda is more important than compromising to better this country and aid the people.

Differences in political opinions have divided the nation. News sites such as CNN, NBC, and Buzzfeed run stories that tend to push liberal-oriented news stories, while FOX news tends to direct news stories geared towards a conservative audience. The most recent example of political bias in both parties can be seen in the varying accounts of the Kavanaugh Hearings.

Democrats attempted to investigate Kavanaugh due to Dr. Ford’s allegations of sexual assault that took place in the eighties, while the Republican majority pushed to have him confirmed to the supreme court.

The majority of the coverage by CNN, NBC, and Buzzfeed supported the allegations by Dr. Ford against Kavanaugh while running articles surrounding her immense credibility and pro-Me Too arguments while attempting to diminish his credibility citing his consumption of alcohol and the multiple falsehoods within his testimony at the hearing. FOX News covered the hearing from a different perspective calling into question Dr.Ford’s reasoning for coming forward after more than 30 years since the alleged assault took place. The coverage has led to multiple social media uprisings including the #ImWithHer hashtag trending on Twitter.

As a teenage girl in today’s current political climate I believe that politicians have become overly concerned with sticking to their declared party for fear of not being re-elected if they decide to change their stance on certain political and social issues such as immigration, legalization of certain narcotics and whether or not to overturn Roe v. Wade, the supreme court decision that legalized the right to abortion in all 50 states. Sticking to one’s moral and political views is important, but the entire concept of human life on earth is based around personal development and evolving, it is perfectly acceptable to change your stance on issues even if they do not lie within the parameters of your political agenda. The politicians should ask themselves how they can better the lives of the people they serve rather than how they can remain within the parameters of their political party.
