How about Mike Trout! Trout is a 27 year-old center-fielder for the Los Angeles Angels. He recently signed what is now the largest contract to ever be signed in major league sports history. Trout signed an extension with the Angels for $430 million dollars over a 12 year span.

Trouts huge contract has not only made headlines in the baseball world but has sparked conversations throughout the NBA and NFL. Although everyone would love to sign a contract of the same magnitude as Trout the reality of this is not possible.

 The NFL has what is known as a “hard” salary cap. Meaning that they in no circumstances can go over this set amount. Now the NFL’s salary cap is growing larger every year so the ability to sign a contract such as trouts wouldn’t be statistically impossible in the future but the likely hood of it happening would be slim to none. This is because of the simple fact that NFL rosters are much larger than than MLB and NBA rosters not to mention the career span of NFL players is a lot shorter due to the psychically demanding nature of the sport.

The likely hood of a contract the same caliber as Trout’s being signed in the NBA is slim also. Although the chances are greater in the NBA because they have a “soft” salary cap  a player being signed for that long, for that much money just wouldn’t make sense. Seeing that production usually takes a nosedive for players once they reach their mid to late 30’s. There is still room for a contract like this to happen though with players becoming increasingly younger it allows for a team, at their discretion(which I don’t believe will happen) to sign a young player to a 10 to 12

year deal for record amounts of money.
