Sound Check

A music review on the band coin.

Sound Check

The year 2020 has caused everyone to look for new ways of entertainment; music has been that way for a lot of people. We’ve cycled through the same playlists all year; need a new suggestion? If you like any alternative rock or pop, try listening to the band COIN.

COIN is an alternative based pop-rock band; the band was created late 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee. COIN has three current band members; Chase Lawrence on lead vocals

, Joe Memmel as lead guitarist and backup vocals, and Ryan Winnen on the drums. A former member, Zachary Dyke, played bass. The band has three albums, the most recent being “Dreamland” which was released in 2020, the next being released in 2017 named “How Will You Know If You Never Try,” and the last being “COIN,” which was released in 2015.

You might have heard the song “Talk Too Much” as it is one of the band’s more popular songs with a towering 120 million streams on Spotify. If you like that one, then I recommend listening to “Crash My Car,” “It’s a Trap,” “Never Change,” “Boyfriend,” ” Valentine,” or “Nobody’s Baby,” as these songs are very upbeat. I would say that the drums and guitar are the leading roles for these songs and add an energetic feel.

On the other hand, COIN has some songs with a fresh and flowy ambiance. Some include “Into My Arms,” “Lately II,” “Malibu 1992,” “Simple Romance,” ” I Want It All,” or “Babe Ruth.” These songs have a repetitive beat, making them feel a little like a trance, in a good way, of course.

My personal favorite song is “Cemetery;” it has a fantastic beat that tells an amazing and unique story. “Cemetery” portrays the story of a man who spent his entire life making money and building a title for himself, but never spent time on relationships with family or friends. “Never made time for the family. But he is the richest man in the cemetery.” and “Owned a city, never saw the streets.” “Or the people that he’d never meet.” These lyrics show that the band is trying to tell the audience to spend a life making relationships over making money.

Overall, I would say COIN has exceptional music and has at least a few songs for everyone to enjoy. Definitely give them a listen. Who knows? You might just enjoy COIN so much that you “Talk Too Much” about them.
