Emma Lockner, Staff Writer

Emma Lockner is a 15-year-old student-athlete who is starting her first semester in the West Wind. Lockner aspires to major in either engineering and architecture at Duke or criminology at UNC Chapel Hill. She was born and raised in Ocean Isle Beach and one of her favorite activities is watching the sunrise on the beach, then getting coffee and bagels with her friends.

“I love living at the beach,” said Lockner. “Especially during the summer when you can drive five minutes to get there and then lay on the beach all day.”

Lockner plays two sports, volleyball and soccer. She has played volleyball since 7th grade and soccer since she was a kid. Her interest in journalism actually sparked on the sidelines. While she was sitting on the sidelines of a West Brunswick men’s soccer game, she was supposed to be writing an essay on what the team could improve.

“My fitness critique ended up sounding a lot more like a journalism report, so I figured I might as well try out something new,” said Lockner. “My teacher read my assignment and told me I would be a great fit.”

In this class she is looking forward to taking pictures at sporting events and to help people spark interest in women’s sports.

“Men’s sporting events get a lot more attention than women’s,” said Lockner. “I think if people see cool pictures they will want to come watch women’s sports for themselves.”
