Swim Team Update

Talk to anyone in the hall, and most will tell you that they were surprised to find that we have had a swim team for six years.

Coach Fletcher is very excited about the upcoming season.

“We have a lot of new swimmers this year, but they have some previous swim experience and that is going to really help us.  They are all working very hard and we are doing more swimming yardage at this point in the year, than we did at any point in the season last year.” , said the coach.

Swimming is a sport that is a lot like track and wrestling in the sense that it is an individual sport, but there is a team aspect in it as well.  Each of the swimmers want to better their own times, but they know that they sometimes have to swim certain events to score points for the team.  Several swimmers have swam the 500 yard freestyle so that the team could score points.

”A lot of the swimmers don’t like to swim the 500 free, 200 individual medley, or the 100 butterfly, but they know that we need to put people in those events to score points.  Mainly because no one likes to swim these events,”  said Coach Fletcher.

Two notable senior swimmers are West seniors Tyler Hucks and Tommy Fallon. They are the only four year swimmers this year. Each of them has been to regional and state competitions and are excited to go back there this year with their teammates.   “I feel like more of an all around swimmer since last year.  My times have dropped and I feel like more of a team player.  Coach has really showed me the ropes and guided me to being a well rounded swimmer,” said Tyler Hucks when asked how he feels about the season.

Coach Fletcher is looking forward to the upcoming season.  “I think we have some great new talent this year and can combine that with our more seasoned swimmers to have our best season yet.”
