On December 7th, 2024 the boys wrestling team had the annual Caleb Hawkins tournament. The team had a great game coming up second in the tournament following behind Lumberton High School.
Before the matches started there was a moment of silence in honor of the late Caleb Hawkins. Hawkins who passed away in a tragic car accident in May of 2009. Hawkins was a multi-sport athlete participating in wrestling, tennis, and cross country. Now even 15 years after his passing his legacy lives on and brings the community together.
The tournament consisted of seven teams, our school, North Brunswick High School and South Brunswick High School, as well as New Hanover, Fairmount, Lumberton, and Pender High School. Lumberton High School ended up winning the tournament with many great plays from their team. West did a great job coming up second with many great plays as well.
While you may be wondering why some of the photos are of much of the same people. Before the tournament begins there’s always a weigh in, to make sure everyone is on weight. Weighing in went crazy. Taking much longer than anticipated and over half of the people that were supposed to participate ended up being cut. This was due to them not meeting weight or being over their expected weight. This then led to a redo in bracket and a late start to the tournament.
Even with the wrestling team almost doubling in size with new people and faces, even new coaches. They had a great day finishing in second place. We hope to continue to see them grow as the season goes on.
