“Usually by the time I get to 3rd period you can see my pimples through my concealer” says sophomore Ashlynn Childers.
The perfect makeup routine takes practice. Just like you need to practice for a sport or anything else, makeup is no different. It takes time, consistency and of course, a lot of trial and error. However, once you get the hang of it, everything flows so much smoother.
“I’ve been doing my makeup since I was in 5th or 6th grade,” said sophomore Bayleigh Morgan. “I definitely had some bad makeup phases.”
Every person who wears makeup wants that smooth, flawless base, right? No patchy or orange bronzer that makes you look like the Lorax, no raccoon eyes from mascara that smudges, no blush blindness that makes you look like a clown, and no makeup that fades after just a couple hours
“I think setting spray is really important,” said Morgan. “I use the Charlotte Tilbury one because it makes my makeup last really long”
It’s all about making sure everything stays in place, looks natural, and lasts all day long.
2025 is the year for smooth bases, perfected eyeliner, long lasting lip combos and volumizing and lengthening mascara. Let’s be real, so many of us teenage girls are at least a little bit into makeup. Whether that’s covering pimples with a concealer, making your lashes appear longer with mascara or adding some color to your face with bronzer to appear more tan.
Here are some of my top tips to help you perfect your base routine and make your makeup last all day:
- Skincare is key
Start your routine with a good primer to smooth the skin and help makeup apply better. A hydrating primer would be good for people with dry, flaky skin. A pore primer would be good for someone with large pores. And a sticky primer is good for everyone who wants their makeup to last all day.
- Setting spray throughout routine
applying setting spray at different stages of your makeup routine to lock everything in place, after concealer and foundation, bronzer and blush, powder, and after ur done with ur whole routine. It helps lock everything in place, keeps your makeup from smudging, and gives your skin a nice, refreshed look.
- Skin prep
Starting with a good skincare routine helps hydrate and soothe your skin, giving your makeup a smooth base to go on. Start by cleansing your face to get rid of dirt and oil, then apply a moisturizer to keep your skin soft and hydrated. When your skin is moisturized, makeup applies way more evenly and doesn’t settle into dry patches or look cakey.
- Powder
Powder is a must if you want your foundation to stay put and not get oily. Without it, your makeup can start looking shiny or patchy, especially if you have oily skin. I always set my under eyes, T-zone, and any other spots that get oily or where my makeup tends to fade the quickest. I use a powder puff to press the powder in, let it sit for a minute, and then I dust it off with a fluffy brush. One major tip that I have is applying powder over your lip liner while baking, and then brushing it off along with the rest of your powder. Powder keeps everything in place and makes your makeup look smooth all day long.
“I think setting ur face is really important so your makeup actually lasts and so you don’t get greasy, said Morgan. “I use the Charlotte Tilbury pressed powder, and the one size loose powder.”
With these tips, you’ll have a smooth, flawless base and makeup that lasts all day long. It’s all about taking the time to prep your skin, finding the right products for your skin type and making sure you lock everything in with the right setting sprays and powders.
I promise, once you get the hang of it, your makeup will look good from the first period all the way to the last bell. Also, you’ll feel so much more confident knowing that your makeup isn’t dry, patchy or flakey, no matter what happens throughout the day.
Research suggests that wearing makeup can profoundly impact our self-esteem and self-efficiency. In a study published in the Journal of Consumer Culture, women who wore makeup reported feeling more confident and capable in personal and professional settings. So, the next time you do your makeup routine, try these tips out, and let me know how they work for you!
“I think doing my makeup makes me feel better about the day, like when my makeup looks good, I automatically know my day is gonna be good” says Childers.
