3/6 Varsity Women’s Soccer Game vs South Columbus

Holding South Columbus scoreless for the first two games of the season has been a great way to kick the season off to a good start.

Varsity Women’s Soccer team lined up and ready for the game to start.

On Thursday, March 6th our Women’s Varsity Soccer beat South Columbus at our home field with a final score of 4-0. Holding South Columbus scoreless for the first two games of the season has been a huge success and a great way to kick the season off to a good start.

To start off the game captains junior Sadie Jones, and seniors Maya Mckenzie, and Brooklyn Coble met up midfield with the opposing team captains to flip a coin to see who gets the ball first.

The first half of the game had a lot more action than the second half. Junior Sadie Jones scored back to back goals and sophomores Grace Migliore and Londyn Fogel had a goal themselves.

“I think this was a great home game to start off the season,” said midfielder Grace Migliore. “I am happy I contributed to the game with my goal.”

All goals were scored in the first half and the second was where defense really shined. Defense played a huge factor in this game due to the scoreless 80 minutes for South Columbus two games in a row.

Seems like our Lady Trojans are going to have a real spectacular season ahead of them and fans can’t wait to see more.

Matthew Argo, Staff Writer

Sixteen-year-old Matthew Argo was raised in Calabash and has lived there his whole life. Argo has been an outfielder in baseball since he was four years old and has been on the school team since his freshman year. “Starting baseball workouts in September is really challenging for me because of the amount of effort I have to put into baseball,” said Argo. “I think the grind is worth it when spring comes though.” Working at Dunkin Donuts on the weekends and full time during the summer gets Argo almost no free time. However, during his free time he plays video games like Fortnite, 2K, and Rocket League. Without him knowing what he wants to do for his future, he still wants to attend college at Chapel Hill because that’s where his older sister goes. “I have always liked math growing up,” said Argo. “It would be cool to be a math teacher who coaches one of the sports after school.” Entering his second semester in journalism, Argo is ready to improve from where he stood last semester. Argo’s interest in the West Wind sparked because of his older sister who took the class when she was in high school. He is looking forward to being a sports anchor and making social media posts for the class.

Jordan Thomas, Editor in Chief

16-year-old junior Jordan Thomas is in his fifth semester of journalism and is serving as the co-editor-in-chief this year. Thomas was born in Orlando, Florida, and spent most of his childhood there, but he eventually moved to North Carolina at nine years old. “The weather here is definitely way nicer, said Thomas.” I like it because it’s not always that hot and it’s not always raining. Florida is a different breed.” Thomas is also a photographer, he does photography for all sports and is a social media intern for a local college baseball summer league team. His interest grew for photography when he joined the West Wind. When Thomas is not doing photography, he likes to spend his free time playing video games with friends or listening to music, specifically R&B and rap. “I feel like those genres get me through life,” said Thomas. “Drake is the best to ever do it and he’s always been my go-to.” Thomas plans on going to the University of Florida State to pursue his journalistic career and get his name out there to grow to the professional level. He wants to work for his favorite team the Jacksonville Jaguars, this team is close to his family in Florida and would be very ideal for him. “I want to be a sports journalist,” said Thomas. “I want to be able to interview the players and write a little bit of articles about them and grow my resume to get even higher up.” Although those are his plans now, they have not always been. “It’s a new thing–when I was in eighth grade all I did was play baseball,” said Thomas. “That was probably my dream with the amount of time I put into it.” The West Wind first sparked Thomas’ interest when he first saw a TikTok at the beginning of his freshman year. When he saw former West Wind student Ava Babson do TikToks for the school, he knew that’s where he wanted to be. “My goal this semester is to have two papers out,” said Thomas. I have to get that Tarheel award for us.”
