On March 14th, 2025 the West Brunswick students got to have a little bit of fun and turn from their traditional mornings of grabbing their backpack and heading to school, to grabbing anything else.
Anything But a Backpack day has been a complete success. Being approved by the administration as long as nothing would interfere with safety, students were highly encouraged by seeing it all on social media and the TV’s around our school.
Some brought bowls, buckets and wagons while others got really creative and had anything from microwaves, strollers, baby carriers, suitcases, and more.
It has become a tradition for years past for our school. It’s a fun way to end a week, let loose and engage in some unique spirit and share our best alternatives.
It has taken place in many schools and really just embraces a sense of creativity and thinking outside of the box. It also fosters a spirit of community as students gather to share their choices and creations.
Participating in this spirit day could help break that cycle of an original or boring school day and allow students to get a sight of something new. You might be walking down the hallway and even turn your head because of something you saw that amused you in today’s spirit day.
Yearbook teacher Mrs. Karwacki could be found taking pictures of the students early this morning through the halls, and continued through the day.
“I liked today’s spirit day,” said sophomore Drayton Swartzmiller, “I packed all my stuff last night in an Amazon box and a trash bag and tied it to a stick.”
Schools also, like here, have turned these spirit days into a mini-competition and award prizes for the funniest, creative, or most practical item used.
“I’m so glad I participated in today’s spirit day,” said freshman Caylee Bulak. “ I brought a baby shopping cart that was pink, and It was fun just carrying something different.”
