Spirit days are meant to bring students together through fun and a break from the usual school routine. But this time, the excitement that usually comes through the halls was not really there. In a spring spirit week meant to build anticipation for the prom, Monday, “Rhyme Without Reason” day, was a chance for students to dress up in pairs with outfits that rhyme and was met with minimal participation.
Only a small group of students participated, and they couldn’t quite fill the halls because of the lack of school spirit. The halls, normally loud with students, felt like any other day. One pair of students dressed as jelly bean and a pregnant teen strolled through halls earning a few smiles and more than a few weird stares.
The staff leaned into spring spirit week perhaps more so than the students. Teachers in the 600 hall were berry, dairy, scary, merry, and married. Coincidentally, members of the English department took on the same rhyme with literary, fairy, cherry, prairie, and military.
Some students blamed the low turnout on poor promotion while others pointed to the theme itself.
“I didn’t even know it was today until the third period,” said freshman Avery Kollman. “It’s a cool idea, but it’s kind of hard to come up with something, especially if you don’t have a partner,”
Still, those who participated had fun and said they’d do it again if more people joined in.
“It’s only awkward if no one else does it,” said a student
Maybe next time, with a little more hype and some outfit inspiration in advance, “Rhyme Without Reason” will give people the reason to dress up.
