Although it wasn’t the sunniest day, the lady Trojans stepped off the bus and walked onto the cougars field to put their cleats on. South Brunswick and West Brunswick are rival teams full of players who are friends, this allowed for a competitive and rowdy match.
It was South Brunswicks senior night, and they were prepared to win for their one and only senior, Keira Stegman. They came into the first half aggressive, but the Trojans did not back down from the fight. With close calls and fouls, the players and coaches were heated leaving South Brunswick Coach Logan Adkisson getting a yellow card.
Both teams had many opportunities to score but goalie Maddie Bermudes came in clutch with saves off of corner kicks, tap-ins, and shots mostly taken by captain Meryn Deutsch. Souths goalie Skyler Mercer played a shutout game with no goals scored on her but tons of shots taken.
After two 40 minute halves, the score remained 0-0. The rigorous game went into overtime, which consists of two 10 minute halves. Within the first minute of overtime, one of the Cougar captains, Meryn Deutsch, scored. The Trojans played rough trying to catch up, and took six shots on goal, and took two corner kicks within an eight minute span. This put hard pressure on the cougars offense pushing them to break, but they never did.
Despite the rivalry and Trojan loss, teams lined up to say “good game” with many players stopping to hug their friends. Although the Trojan
s did not win the last game of the season, the cougar had a bittersweet win for their senior night.
