“The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” was released to Netflix on August 10, 2018, and is based on the 2008 novel, written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The film takes place in 1946 London just after World War II. Lily James, who plays Juliet Ashton in the film, is an upcoming actor known for her roles in “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (2016), “Baby Driver” (2017), “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” (2018), and “Yesterday” (2019). She even stars in the new movie, “Rebecca”, coming to Netflix this year. She portrays her character, Juliet, in such a memorable way that I couldn’t imagine any other actress playing her.

On January 12, 1946, Juliet Ashton received a letter from Dawsey Adams, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and began her pen-pal journey. The island of Guernsey is no longer occupied by the Germans since World War II ended in 1945. After learning more about the island of Guernsey and Dawsey’s book club from letters, she wishes to write an article about their life. She decides to visit them and her writing begins.

I loved how the film was centered around friendship and family moreso than romance because it portrays the characters as more complex and independent. The movie was filmed in London and Bristol, both beautiful locations, perfect for the setting described in the book. I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys old-fashioned movies with a great ending. Although potato peel pie doesn’t sound appetizing, this film is the equivalent to comfort food.
