When it comes to choosing the right device for schoolwork, it seems students aren’t using the school Chromebook as much, but rather their personal iPad or personal MacBook/laptop. Although we are issued a Chromebook, students still seem to have reasons to use their own personal devices.
Even though it is stated in the WBHS student handbook that “the use of a cell phone/personal electronic device is prohibited during instructional time.”
Starting with the most common device, MacBooks. MacBooks have many advantages. They have great performance and can handle high-demanding tasks. MacBooks have a high-quality build, allowing them to stand up well against any damage; a long battery life, allowing students to work consistently; and allow students to access the same apps they would on their phones, and overall, MacBooks are appealing. They look nice and seem to be a trend.
“I prefer my MacBook over my Chromebook because it’s easier to log in, and my teacher can’t watch me on Classwize,” said sophomore Ashlynn Childers. “I also think it just looks cuter, and I can decorate it since it’s my own personal device.”
Macbooks are a personalized device, so unlike a chromebook which is school issued, teachers cannot manage or watch what you are doing. Some feel this contributes to a sense of increased privacy.
“I love my iPad,” said freshman Lilly Grant. “It’s easier and faster to get on, and my teachers can’t watch what I do like they could if I used my Chromebook.”
They are lightweight and easy to carry. It can be put in your backpack and be used in any setting. Just like the MacBook, iPads seem to work faster and have better performance in comparison to the Chromebook. You can also purchase other items such as the Apple Pencil, which is great for drawing and note-taking.
“I use my iPad for everything, even at school,” said sophomore Drayton Swartzmiller. “It’s easier to get out, and I can do all my work but still have access to my notifications.”
Overall, students seem to like the convenience of having their own devices that they can access quicker, work faster on, and that have better performance. They also can access their own personal notifications that aren’t going to be watched by teachers.
“I prefer using a MacBook,” said sophomore Boston Babson. “It’s easier for my BCC classes, and the teachers can’t see my screen, so it doesn’t feel like I’m being watched.”
