High schoolers, especially the students who just got their license, always want to be somewhere and doing something. Here are some Brunswick County hot spots, and popular places to be.
“I normally hangout at either waffle house or fun places like that,” said sophomore PJ Cambell. “I usually find out about hangouts from snapchat, you know people are posting where they’re at.”
After football and basketball games, or school based events in general, most groups will go to Chilis of Waffle house. They love the food and it’s a spot to find familiar faces and have a good time. Both Waffle House and Chili’s have affordable, good food. Finding a cheap restaurant open 24 hours a day is a high school student’s dream. Especially when it’s located right down the road from the school. Athletes and fans come after games to grub with their families and friends.
If you don’t want to drive to North Myrtle and Wilmington but still have a couple things you need to pick up, there is a shopping area in Shallotte that contains affordable and useful stores. Many people pick up a coffee or smoothie and walk around Ulta and Marshalls, go to Hobby Lobby for arts and crafts or get food at Tropical Smoothie, and Five Guys.
Another hotspot is the Ocean Isle Beach park. The area has fields for soccer, baseball, and softball, basketball courts, dog parks, and a park. Many athletes come to get extra practice and compete in pickup games. Brunswick County Parks and Recreation use the soccer, baseball and softball fields for games on Saturday mornings and afternoons.
“Just wherever the functions are, I really just be out.” said Aysan Gause. ”I heard the functions are crazy, cause everybody is there.”
During the summer specifically, Ocean Isle beach is always very busy, specifically the pier. Grabbing a swimsuit, a towel and heading to the pier knowing you will have a great time tanning, swimming and hanging out with everyone you know. Right down the road from the pier is the Homemade Ice Cream Shop, and Sunset Slush to cool down from all that tanning everyones been doing. After everyone’s rejuvenated from their beach naps and hungry, they can head over to Sharky’s, Jinks Creek, Pelican’s Perch and OIB Fish Company to grab a bite to eat.
“Everywhere you go, you will probably find someone you know,” said Cambell. “It’s a small town.”
