On Friday, October 3rd, 19 West Brunswick students attended a career exploration field trip to the Brunswick Community College Health Science Center. This field trip offered hands-on activities as well as lectures with presentations to allow students to explore various healthcare and educational pathways.
Students met in the West Brunswick bus parking lot at approximately 7:40 a.m in order to board the bus and head to BCC for their full day of activities and learning. As students began to arrive, they headed to room 106 where they all participated in their first activity of the day: Stop the Bleed, which is a program that works to empower individuals to take action during situations in which someone may be experiencing severe bleeding.
After the Stop the Bleed sessions, students were separated into 2 groups, one being led by Health Science teacher Mrs. Rohr, and the other being led by Career and Development Coordinator Mrs. Babson. Both groups rotated through a total of 4 stations, where they were allowed to speak with current college students within the Health Science program and instructors. As they rotated through each station they were able to better understand different health career pathways, and what it takes to succeed in certain healthcare roles. The rotations included : BCC Nursing, BCC Dental Assisting, BCC Emergency Medicine, UNC Pharmacy, UNC Occupational Therapy, and lastly UNC Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
From glucose sampling to intubation, each rotation allowed students to better understand daily responsibilities that the role may require as well as what their day to day might look like.
At 12:40 students all met back together at room 106 where they were able to get Chick Fil A for lunch as they listened to not only BCC, but also UNC students talk about their experience in the Health Science Pathway as well their advice for joining a career in health science.
At around 1:15 students made their way back outside where they took a group photo before heading back to the bus to depart back to West Brunswick High School. While choosing a future career may seem far away for many of you, career exploration field trips are one way to help you realize how close the future actually is. By being able to participate in different healthcare situations, and exploring different career opportunities these students are one step closer to seeing what their futures have to offer. This trip was not just a learning experience but instead a way to make these students’ goals feel more reachable.
” I think field trips like this are very important for high school students,” Said Health Science teacher Jenny Rohr. “Because it allows students to see different aspects of Health Science instead of just nursing.”
