As the seasons start to change, the “Friday Night Light” football games, spirit week, and homecoming dance approach. What a beginning of a school year, everything pushing us to keep going, but what does Homecoming week entail?
Spirit week: October 6th-October 10th
Monday was “Sleeping Beauty.” Students kicked off the week wearing their favorite pajamas. Tuesday was Disney Duo Day. It was like a “twin day,” but better. Students grabbed their duo partners and dressed up. Wednesday was “Let’s Have A Ball: Dress as your favorite Prince or Princess.” Thursday was “Nightmare Before Homecoming” and students wore their Halloween costumes. Friday wass #TrojanPrideDay, which meant freshman wore white, sophomores wore green, juniors wore black, and seniors wore togas.
“My favorite thing leading up to the Homecoming game would be spirit week,” said junior Aniyaah Jacobs. “It’s a little weird how spirit week is after the dance, though.”
After all the fun spirit days leading up to the homecoming game, we had the pep rally. This happens before breaks and the homecoming game, and it’s meant to boost school spirit.
“I really love the pep rally games,” said Jacobs. “It really gets everyone ready for the big football game afterwards.”
The Homecoming game:
The game everyone had been waiting for arrived on October 10th. It was set: Seven o’clock against New Hanover. Everyone wants to catch some football and know who got crowned Homecoming King and Queen, which gets announced during halftime.
“I enjoy going to the Homecoming games and being able to cheer for my team with my friends,” said junior Taydon Graf. “I really enjoy seeing who wins King and Queen.”
Normally, the game would be on Friday night before the day of the dance, but this year the homecoming game is five days after the dance. This is a little different than students are used to.
“I feel like the Homecomoing schedule shouldn’t have changed from last year,” said junior Riley Clemmons. “I feel like it’s odd. We are all used to it being the night before the dance.”
The Homecoming Dance:
The night that the week had all been leading up to finally came. From all the fun little spirit week days getting to that Friday night game, the excitement was building up. Hair and nails were getting done, and dresses and shoes were purchased. Pictures of couples, duos and even huge groups are taken while everyone is bursting with excitement.
“I’ve never been to a dance,” said Graf. “ This will be my first dance, and I’m excited for that.”
Everyone has their favorite things to do before or while getting ready for an event. Even if it is just hanging out with friends, listening to music, or getting a bite to eat, people have their pregame ritual.
“I think the theme of “Once Upon A Hoco” is so cute and fun,” said sophomore Annaleigh High. “It’s fun because you can wear long dresses instead of just short ones.”
