On Tuesday, January 20th, the Men’s Varsity Basketball faced a thrilling game against the Ashley Eagles, winning 72-41. Becoming their 11th win of the season.
Like every game, there is a theme for the student section, today’s game being ‘Pink Out’ for Breast Cancer Awareness. Fans rushed in the stands all dressed in picks, and thanks to two clubs at school, they had some help. The Juniorettes, a club for teen girls that specializes in helping the community and school, had face painting and glitter to get decked out in. The other club being Key Club, an organization that focuses on service, had a photobooth. You could take pictures with pink props before heading into the game.
The Trojans came out strong, winning the ball at tip-off as well as getting the first points on the board. They finished the first quarter up 14-8. Then in the second quarter, both teams scored another 14 and 8 point, with West up by 12 at half, 28-16.
Today’s halftime game looked a little different. The stadium took a moment of silence for all who have been affected by cancer. The game announcer then asked those who had batted to stand if they wished to applaud them for their courageous battle. Then came the time for the 50-50 raffle, where a fan won $275, and the other $275 going to a program in honor of a late staff member at West that helps people who have faced tough battles.
As the third quarter began, the Trojans knew they had the win in their hand but continued to play hard through the third and fourth quarters. Eventually winning 71-41.
There were two undoubtedly standout players in the game. One being junior Jerrison Dixion, number 15, who scored 27 points through the game. The other being freshman Jacob Woodard, who is quickly showing signs of being the next best. Being the only freshman on the varsity team, and scoring 9 points in the game.
West will face the screaming Eagles on the Eagles’ home court for the final game of the season on February 10th.
