On April 24th, the Women’s Varsity Softball Team had a home game against Topsail High School. West ended up pulling through and beating Topsail 2-0. It also happened to be senior night, which made the win extra special to the team.
Before the game began, they had a meaningful recognition for all of the seniors on the team. The seniors are Olivia Brown, Alivia West, Grace Hutzell, Maddie Hutzell, and Brooke Somers. They all individually walked with their family members through a line of their other teammates. Their coaches were waiting to greet them with flowers, warm smiles, and joyful hugs. Many tears were shed all throughout the stands as well as on the field. Even with all the emotions, the team still pulled everything together before the game started.
The game was full of energy and excitement from the very first pitch. West played hard and made sure to support and encourage one another all throughout every inning. Within the first inning alone, West had already gotten their 2 points, giving them motivation. With Olivia Brown’s powerful pitching and the strong and reliable defense, Topsail had no chance to get any runs. The game was very intense with full bases majority of the time, keeping everyone engaged. Even with the pressure, Topsail did not gain any points ending up with West taking the win.
After the game ended, the seniors went into the dugout where there was a large poster waiting for them to sign out. The five seniors coated their hands with paint and placed their final hand prints under their names. Once this was done they all joined together and cherished this final moment. It was emotional, heartfelt, and left everyone watching very touched.
Overall, this game against Topsail was very inspiring. Both teams showed great effort, determination and sportsmanship. Throughout all innings they made impressive plays and communicated well amongst each other. Their athletic skills were showcased very well in this game, from batting and running to playing in the outfield after 3 outs. West kept their energy up from start to finish and ended with the victory on a very meaningful night.
