Who doesn’t love Christmas? The bright colors, the decorations, the sweet treats– what’s there not to love? Christmas is all about traditions, and the Flotilla hosted in Ocean Isle Beach is one of them. Since the year 2003, the Flotilla has thrived with love and excitement, with boats decked out to their best potential so all the islanders can enjoy the show.
“I come every year, and I celebrate Christmas everywhere,” said OIB Flotilla Santa. “My favorite part of the Flotilla is being able to spend time with all the children.”
People came home just to see the show this year. Some stood out on their docks in the freezing cold to witness the glowing lights as they passed them on the waterway. Others watched from the seats they set up by Fish Compnay, wrapped in blankets to stay warm. The ones that had the advantage to watch right from their home window stayed warm while the boats lit up their rooms.
“I have so many wonderful friends at our house, and I get to meet and make new friends,” said Ocean Isle Beach resident Donna Cruz. “I always watch it with all of my friends. It’s just a wonderful evening.”
Families were throwing holiday parties as they prepared for the boat show to start. The Flotilla was a great way to start the December season off– bringing families together not only to enjoy the show, but to enjoy the company of one another. The children awed as they stared at all of the different boats set up, from Grinch boats all the way to Hawaii boats. Everyone who signed up to decorate their boats understood the assignment.
“I love the camaraderie around it, just being with my friends and family,” said Ocean Isle Beach resident Alexia Smollen. “I grew up going, and I come back every now and then to bring back my childhood memories”
The Flotilla is not just a beautiful show- it’s done for an amazing cause. The beautiful boat show raises a great deal of money for the Brunswick Family Assistance, (BFA) which is a local charity helping families in need. The funds come from boat entry fees, raffle tickets, merchandise sales and donations from associated parties and events. Local businesses donate items like their jewelry to auction off for the raffles. Flotilla T-shirts are sold, and places like Sharkeys sponsor the event.
November 29th was a wonderful night for all. It may have been almost below freezing, but everyone’s hearts were warned. An annual event that will always be done for an amazing cause. There was one amazing winner- yet even those who did not win still spread joy to all. Those who put this event together help to make sure everyone has an amazing holiday season.
