On a hot Monday evening (March 9th), the Trojans faced off against the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs. Prior to this game, the Trojans won their first game against Socastee on the road, gaining a 3-1 victory. Olivia Shuchart, Grace Miglore, and Sadie Jones were the goal scorers in this match.
On March 9th, this was the first home game under Head Coach Anthony Tapia for the women’s team. Tapia was formally known as the Head Coach for the men’s team, but was named the women’s coach after the men’s season ended. He took the men’s soccer team to the second round of playoffs, which hasn’t been done since the 2019 season for the Trojans.
As this game kicked off for the Trojans, it was a very slow start. Senior Ava Tarman committed a foul inside the box, which led to a penalty kick. When this foul was committed, emotions were high. Players yelling, coaches screaming, and opposing fans cheering for the upcoming penalty kick. The Trojan’s goalkeeper (Maddie Richardson) has been a part of the team all four years of high school soccer, and she is the one defending this goal. As the cameras came out and all eyes were on this kick, the whistle blew, and the ball was kicked, Richardson knew exactly where to go and made a perfect save on the ball.
As the momentum turned to the Trojans side, senior Sadie Jones (Methodist Soccer commit) took a great touch on the ball and dribbled through the defense for a perfect shot to put the Trojans up 1-0.
West Brunswick was going into the half up 1-0, looking to put away this game and defeat a great opponent in North Myrtle Beach. As the Trojans came out of the half, Jones had a corner kick, and the opposing team attempted to clear the ball, but ended up kicking the ball inside our net to put us up 2-0. This goal was awarded to Jones, which gave her two goals for the game.
In the last ten minutes of this game, time was ticking, and the Chiefs were trying to find anything positive to come out of this match. The Chiefs were awarded another penalty kick, which Richardson wasn’t able to save, and gave North Myrtle their first goal of the game.
The time ultimately was too much to overcome, and the final score for this match was 2-1. This was a great victory for the Trojans and put them at (2-0). Head Coach Anthony Tapia continues his culture of winning and is showing these girls how to get it done.
