After school the girls begin to whip out the brushes, cleats and lip gloss in preparation for their long-awaited media day. On March 4th, the women’s varsity soccer team gathered at the goal not only to showcase their beauty, but also a few footwork skills for the camera.
Behind all the glitz and glam there’s some things that are even more striking. The 25-26 season finally feels different from the rest, this may be because of the new head and assistant coaches guiding the girl’s way to glory. Head coach Anthony Tapia, assistant coaches Barrett McMullan and Kurt Nielsen and leaders who took a step down and still remain present for the girls: Mike Adcock and Josslyn Greer. After several years of rough seasons and learning the hard way, this team finally seems to have it figured out beginning the season with a 3-0-0 record.
The changes are intentional. The coaching staff has spent the offseason not only working on defense and ball control but have spent most of their practices doing fitness. Whether sprints or miles this team was hustling to rewrite what their team is capable of. Although every lap around the field felt redundant, the gameplay has exponentially increased in not only speed but energy as well.
Seniors Sadie Jones, Maddie Richardson, Andrea Flores and Ava Tarman have given this team their best effort for 4 years and finally feel everything clicking for the season that matters most. Freshman is taking notes to redesign what this varsity team looks like on the field as well as in the strategy and gameplay.
“It’s refreshing to have a season start out so well,” said junior captain Grace Migliore. “I’ve seen our wins and losses throughout my years, but this season looks promising and am excited to watch my seniors leave on a high note.”
Although the season is still fresh it has been fueled by passion and drive for change, which has ultimately been showcased on the pitch. Whether parents, fans and teammates, the community is excited for what this season has to offer. We will see what they have to offer against Wilmington schools later into the season.
