DECA Empowering Future Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs

DECA Empowering Future Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs

What it is: DECA, or Distributive Education Clubs of America, is a student organization that attracts individuals to productive careers such as marketing, management, business and merchandising. DECA is a club found all around the U.S. It is co-curricular and serves a very important part in an everyday classroom.

“I joined DECA because it shows lifeskills and I want to go in Marine Biology so DECA teaches me life skills.” said Ashley Norfleet

What they do: Club members will study a topic such as principles of hospitality and tourism or apparel and accessories and take a test based on that topic then they will go to a competition to compete and try their best in hopes of winning. Then if you win, your team will be able to bring that award home for you and your school.. DECA  shows you helpful resources through life and how to use them, like public speaking and problem solving. They can help their peers and themselves with their futures and by knowing more about business and management skills.

  • “DECA can be challenging but it helps you become driven and focus on your future,” said president Adler Rice.

They can help their peers and themselves with their futures and by knowing more about business and management skills.

Why you should consider joining: When most asked why the members joined DECA it’s because of wanting to build the knowledge of business and the management. The DECA members can take this and apply it to the real world around them to help focus on their futures and what they want to do with their life. DECA shows that you can take ownership of yourself and you are a driven hardworking person.

  • “I joined DECA to help me with business, and it looked like a really fun opportunity with my friends,” said secretary Simon Matvey.
  •        “DECA also gives scholarships if you win so I wanted to achieve one to help me with my college journey.” Said Norfleet

The community plays a very important role in the club with your peers and friends. You have fun and alot of encouragement. When asking most of the members, their general response is typically positive.

  • “It’s a fun community where you can learn and have fun at the same time,” said Rice.

Chayton Cheers, Staff Writer
Chayton Cheers is a 15-year-old sophomore who wanted to expand his writing and people skills, which ultimately led him to join the West Wind this year. Cheers was born in Loris, South Carolina but has become a local to Brunswick County, being raised in Ocean Isle Beach all his life. “I like to write,” said Cheers. “I think that the West Wind is going to improve my writing and people skills.” When Cheers is not listening to Taylor Swift or reading you can often find him working at The Daily Scoop on Main, doing his schoolwork, or hanging out with his family. Cheers values his education and is striving for big things. Unsure of what he wants to do with his future, Cheers does know he wants it to be writing-centered, either writing for a newspaper or becoming a novelist. Cheers wants to either attend West Virginia University, Appalachian State, or the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. “I honestly don't know what I want to do,” said Cheers. “I want to go wherever life takes me.”
