After a timeout, lady Trojans are ready to go back out on the court. They are ready to win the set.

On Thursday, September 28th, the varsity volleyball team faced the Topsail Pirates. Although all matches were close, the Lady Trojans lost 0-3. Good effort and good sportsmanship were put in throughout the entire game. Another loss isn’t enough to bring them down.

During this game, the team was cut short of players as many were sick and couldn’t attend the game. Most players stayed in the game the whole time. Playing all three sets, they stuck it out and kept fighting. Going back and forth with Topsail Pirates on who took the lead, unfortunately, Lady Trojans repeatedly fell short.

You can hear the fans cheering endlessly. All the moms, dads, grandparents, and other family and friends that come to support are proud of their players. Everyone in the room kept a positive attitude because players kept fighting the whole game.

During each timeout, the coach positively reinforced her players in order to keep them going. After each break ended, the team broke off by saying things such as “family,” “West,” “Trojans,” or “fight.” Keeping a positive attitude kept the team together and fighting until the end.

Lady Trojans always fight hard during their games, but the Topsail Pirates fought a little harder and pulled through during these matches. Everyone knows both teams want to come out on top and it all comes down to players.

During all three sets, they never lost hope. By watching a game, you can see that losing does not put these girls down. They put in blood, sweat, and tears during their games as well as their practices.

Gaining a point or losing a point these girls always come together. They accept a mistake that was made while the others let them know it’s okay to mess up. When they gain a point you can see the smile on their faces as they celebrate by high fives.

Campbell Cheers is a seventeen-year-old senior member of the West Wind staff who really loves the beach. “My favorite part of growing up here is having the freedom to go to the beach whenever I want,” said Cheers. “Another thing I really like about living here is growing up and still having the same friends that I went to elementary and middle school with.” Her hobbies include playing tennis and pickleball with her friends. She doesn’t do it in a competitive spirit though. “We started playing tennis just for fun then that led us into playing pickleball,” said Cheers. “We don't compete or anything like that, it’s just for fun.” Campbell is in her second semester of the West Wind. She took a year-long break in her junior year but returned because she loved journalism. “I joined the class in my sophomore year,” said Cheers. “I didn’t do it my junior year due to a full schedule but I know I wanted to come back my senior year because of how much I loved the community.” Campbell’s plans for the future are to attend UNCW. She strives to earn a bachelor's degree in business. “I know I wanna go to UNCW because my parents went there,” said Cheers. “I also wanna go so I can stay close to home.”
