Lights go out and the Trojans jog onto the court, hyped and ready for the game, on Thursday, December 4th our men’s varsity basketball team faced off against Cape Fear Academy in one of the most exciting games of the season. The final score of 43-38 really had the audience on the edge of their seat throughout the game.

The referee tossed the ball into the air for the tip-off, K’Veon Griffin, the Trojans’ senior leader, got first possession. The Trojans started off cold, only scoring 5 in the first quarter and allowing Cape Fear to score 13, but this would soon change later on in the game.

The second quarter starts and ends strongly with West getting more possessions, rebounds, shot attempts, leading to West outscoring Cape Fear 9-7. Now that may not seem like a lot, but this momentum shift really got our Trojans the mental reset they needed during the second half of the game.

The third quarter started with West getting the ball first. Nobody on either team could stop one another, so a majority of the points came from this quarter alone. With the third quarter ending 26-35, it is clear to say that the energy died down quickly. However, the student section never backed down and cheered on the Trojans to make one of the best fourth quarter comeback they have had in a while. Scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter and holding Cape Fear to 3 points couldn’t be anymore perfect. The hard work and determination set in the fourth quarter is the real reason that our Trojans came out on top.

Impressive stats from this game consists of senior Kveon Griffin leading the team in assists with a total of 7, senior Jonathan Daniels taking initiative and scoring 11 points for our Trojans, and junior Isaac Clarida being a beast in the paint and collecting a total of 9 rebounds. These star players show that teamwork really makes a difference.
