On the 2nd day of December, the basketball program geared up for a competitive day competing against the Whiteville Wolfpack, specifically the women’s varsity team. As the junior varsity boys wrapped up, the lady trojans peered through the glass, eyes focused on the court, waiting to defeat their opponents.
In the first quarter of the game, the court was still new. Both teams were playing competitively in order to gain a heavy lead and strip each other of confidence however neither team wavered. Both teams played with grit as the Trojans pulled away with a slight upper hand. The first quarter closed with a confident Trojan lead of 11–5.
By the second quarter the atmosphere shifted with quickened pace and things started to get rowdy. Both teams were skillfully competitive ultimately showing who wants it more. The second quarter ended with another Trojan lead, 29-13. The clock buzzed for halftime as the Trojans gathered excitedly and stayed focused with their eye on the victory while the wolfpack joined to create a new game plan to knock the trojans off their toes.
In the final quarters, the gameplay was still exemplifying signs of roughness and less skillful play. The Trojans managed to gain another 18 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth, setting them miles ahead of Whiteville who only earned 13 points total over the second half of the game, ultimately showcasing their determination, and growing confidence as the clock wound down.
The night’s MVP honors went to junior Ja’Kya Johnson, who delivered a powerful 17-point performance, sinking three free throws and seven two-point shots. Close behind her was sophomore Tameya Thomas, putting up an impressive 14 points with a three-pointer, five two-point shots, and a free throw ultimately further proving her consistency on the court.
In the battle of highway 130, the lady trojans defeated the wolfpack by a whopping 61 to 26 adding another win to their early season. Although Whiteville lost this time, on Friday, December 5th, the Wolfpack will host the rematch on their home court, where they’ll be hungry for redemption and determined to even the score.
