On December 9th the day of the Winter Formal had finally come and students were already lined up at the door even before the planned time with snacks and friends while the staff added a few final touches before the doors were opened.

The staff finally let students in and they poured into the cafeteria adorned in a gold and silver theme complete with white and gold stars and twinkling lights. Despite the theme being celestial almost no one truly followed the theme because really, a high school dance’s themes are not much more other than a light suggestion. Even so, students were glammed out in glittery flowing dresses and suits, with some even in tuxedos

The DJ had set up his equipment on the stage, ready to play for the students and keep the mood going. The energy was high as students danced together in groups on the dance floor, hyping each other up with the DJ’s music pumping and couples eating with each other behind the stage by the snack tables. The refreshment table offered a variety of snacks, including popcorn, cupcakes, sliders, and fruit snacks. As well as soft drinks, lemonade, and water to keep the dancing students hydrated.

The cotton candy stand has two flavors, blue raspberry, and cherry, and popcorn was passed out bags of popcorn and allowed students to season their own popcorn just how they liked it. There were two extra areas for students to take photos together to remember what an amazing time they had

The dance lasted from 7:15 PM to 10 PM, and many students took the opportunity to unwind after a long week and enjoy the evening with their friends. Students could also take advantage of the photo booth, where they could get creative with their poses for a fun keepsake.

As the night went on students started to unwind again, settling into their seats again to have light conversation and rest their feet after a long night of dancing and laughter. Eventually, students slowly filtered out of the cafeteria after the event, having made memories and had their fun.

Fleur Kelly originated from Tacoma, Washington but moved to Shallotte when they were thirteen. Kelly is currently a 15 year old sophomore who enjoys writing, baking, and music.    “I’m not really a very big sports person,” said Kelly. “I like writing, I like listening to music. Listening to music with my partner is mainly what I do outside of class.”    Kelly is currently loving the music of I-Monster and Machine Girl, finding an escape in music as well as their writing.   Kelly joined the West Wind to write about their ideas and show who they are and what they think with no judgment. They feel that the West Wind is the safest place for them to express their thoughts and opinions in the school.   “I want to improve as much as I can, in everything I can, so that I can continue with the skills that I have and properly self-teach from now on,” Kelly said.   Kelly has plans to continue their career in writing through college and would like to be an editor after college. Kelly hopes to achieve these goals but plans to work on their overall skills before pursuing professional roles.    “I’ve recently thought about being a professional editor,” Kelly said. “I think it could be good for me financially, and I think I could have the opportunity to mentally thrive in that environment.”
